Domain question

When registering a domain, I see the option for something
called domain locking which is added protection (and
cost) to prevent domain transfers, hijacking, etc.

Is it that easy to hijack or transfer a domain from one
company to another? Don't you have to have passwords to
do this? Or is protection supposed to be on top of
passwords?

It is in additions to the your passwords. Best to ask the domain registry what it truly covers.
