.DOT always opens as .DOT not as a .DOC

Hello,
I need help with word 2003 templates.

I have a number setup on my PC and I had to format and rebuild the PC, reinstalling office 2003 and putting back my data without any problems. However I now find that whenever I double click the .DOT file it opens the file the .DOT instead of opening a new .DOC based on the template.

I’ve experimented...
I created a new template, making sure it was saved as a template. And this also opens as a .DOT instead of creating a new .DOC
I loaded up one of my original .DOT files on another PC and when this is double clicked it correctly opens a new .DOC based on the template.

So it looks like a config issue with the recently reloaded PC. I’ve trawled the web but can’t find any help. Any idea what the problem might be please?

Just to let you know, I resolved this by removing and re-installing Word. It works exactly as it should right after that.
