Dotted lines that won't go away

I placed a series of lines in a document I'm working on by typing three
stars for Word to automatically format them. The lines look like a
series of dots. The problem is that now I cannot delete the lines no
matter what I do - they just move around. Any ideas?

Hi Cora‹

Those are borders. Select the line and some space around it, and use Format
| Borders and Shading | None to get rid of them.
