Double-clicking format painter doesn't work

Word 2007, running on XP. When I double-click the format painter
icon, it only applies the formatting once, and does not repeat it on
my subsequent selection. I've tried varying the timing between clicks,
but that doesn't help.

Is there a setting I need to change somewhere?

Note that it is easier to make use of Ctrl+Shift+C to copy formatting and
then use Ctrl+Shift+V to paste it (repeatedly if necessary).

Some events can effectively disable this. Do you have code (or an AddIn with
code) that might have Document SelectionChange event code running?

My add-ins are Acrobat PDFMaker, Google Desktop, and Omnipage. Does
one of those diable it?

Start Word in Safe Mode and test the double-click Painter function. From
Start, Run, (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word opens in Safe Mode where it bypasses all
customisations, add-ins, templates, macros, etc. Open a document and test
Format Painter now.

Terry,

Yes, it works when I do that. Still doesn't work the other way. What
next (to isolate the problem)?

This suggests strongly that there is a third party add-in that is causing
the problem. You need to isolate which add-in is causing the problem by
disabling all add-ins and then enabling them one at a time. Once you know
which add-in i8s causing the problem, you should seek support from the
provider.
