Double Clicking Office Document icons freezes computer

I am running Windows XP pro and Office 2003 pro. It seems recently,
when I double click a word or excel document on my desktop, it takes
about a full minute for the document to open. If I first open word then
do a file, open, the document opens immediately. Any ideas what maybe
causing the problem?
