Double column footnotes

Is there any way to have double column generated footnotes
in a single column manuscript?

I have a long (50+ page) document, in which there is a small section (about 4 pages) of text in 2 columns. I need to footnote something on the left side of the two-columned text, and when I do, the footnote text defaults to appearing at the bottom only of the left column instead of displaying across the entire bottom of the page (which is the way I need it to appear for my dissertation). How can I do this

Many thanks, Deb

Unfortunately, when you have a footnote in a multi-column section, the
footnotes must be in multiple columns as well, and any following text is
bumped to the next page. That's enough of a problem without the extra ones
you seem to be encountering. For a workaround, see
