I have to download my homework and type in the answers in the space provided and for some reason when I try to type on the doc a window pops up and says that this is not a valid selection

That's a bug in Word 2008.

The document has protected sections and the protection is working correctly.

Either use Word 2004, or ask the originator of he document to send you an
unprotected copy.

There is currently no other solution.
