downloading attachment opens works instead of excel

All of a sudden when I try to download/open an attachment from e-mail my
computer tries and fails to open it in microsoft works. The attachments are
excel spreadsheets and if saved to my computer first can be opened in excel,
but I need to be able to open them automatically in excel.
