downloading duplicate messages from server

This happens on 2 of my office's computers using Outlook:
outlook checks for mail and sees hundreds of new messages,
when there are maybe only 75-100 new messages on the
server. It will download 2-3 copies of identical
messages. It will download messages from days ago that
have already been read. I've contacted my mail/web host,
who claims the problem is with outlook. I've installed all
the new updates on these computers.

Do you leave messages on the server, or delete them after downloading?
I.e., What option do you have checked on the Advanced tab of your account
properties pages?
