Downloading files:
What format of file? Picture, PDF, Video, Audio, Flash, doc. xls, ppt, ???
Normally you link to the file you want to be downloaded with Your link
i.e. Insert Hyperlink > type in the name of the file > specify things like target
or bookmark (if applicable).> Click OK.
Upload the page and the file (keeping the directory structure the same if the
downloadable file is not in the home directory on your server.
Note If you link to for example, a PDF document, it will open online in the adobe
reader if the user has it, else will then prompt for download (or may open the
"Open With...." dialogue box, prompting user to choose the application to open
the document. same with MS Word or other Office apps. With PDF's provide a link
to the adobe.com site so they can download the reader if they need it.
To download files like Word or Excel (assuming user doesn't have the
applications) that, it is best to put them in a compressed format i.e. Winzip or
similar which will 'force' the file to download, then the user can open the zip
file and retreive the actual docs from the zipped folder,.
Word documents MAY be able to be opened in Windows Word Pad, but may not, and
that would not be compatible with Macintosh or other O/S besides Windows.
If the file is a picture, merely clicking the link will load the pic in the
browser, you would need to right-click and 'save target as' to download.
Streaming Video:
Your host would have to support it i.e. allow you to use the bandwidth needed
etc. Ask their support.
