I'm trying to put the word "DRAFT" diagnally across a Word
document in a shadow font. Can you help?

I would use Word Art (available from the Drawing Toolbar)
to insert and anchor the text "Draft" in the document
header. Then format and position the WordArt object to
suit.

What you are describing is a watermark. How you insert this depends on
whether you have Word 2002 (Format | Background | Printed Watermark) or an
earlier version (see "HOW TO: Create a Watermark in Microsoft Word 2000" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211324).
