Drawing Canvas

The select objects tool in Word 2003 seems a bit different to 2002. When I
click on the tool button, a drawing canvas randomly appears in the document.
This canvas will 'disappear' when the tool is used to select something. Any
ideas?

I've never seen anything like this... Are you sure the Drawing Canvas wasn't
inserted and just left in the document? Is the option to insert a Drawing
Canvas turned off in Tools/Options/General?
