Taz' solution of removing com.microsoft.Word.plist certainly worked for me.

I had the same problem and updated without solving it, however, deleting the
file com.microsoft.Word.plist in the library folder did the trick. This was
suggested by Bob Jones, who is clearly a genius. Many thanks.
