The font names stack up and I want to get rid of them.

What exactly do you mean by "stack up"?
If you mean the drop down list that you have to scroll down
to find the font you want, the only thing you can do is
delete the fonts you don't want in the listing from
C:\WINDOWS\FONTS folder. Do not delete any of the system
fonts however. Those fonts that end in .FON and a few of
the TTF fonts, with TAHOMA.TTF as a primary system font, are
system fonts.

You didn't mention the version of Word you're using, but you can remove the Most Recently Used (MRU) font list at the top of the
Word drop down in the registry
