drop down menu in query

I'd like to do a simple query to extract all records with a particular
state, so =["state"] to get the state input to filter, but is it possible to
have the selection of the state as a drop down box in the query rather than
the user having to input the state.
In the table its a drop down list linked to another table, so no possiblity
of misspelling and I'd like the same in the query.

You should do this by opening the query from a button on a form. On this same
form you could then have your drop down combo box for your list of states.
The criteria in your state field in the query can then be set to
[Forms]![NameOfYourForm]![ComboBoxName]
