drop down menu selecton not working

when i go to open or save as and click on the arrow to navigste to a folder
or file word excel etc stops responding and wont work- the not responding
message appears.

i can navigate using go up a level etc.

it just happened - no observable cause, have updted to SP2 and tried
reinstalling with no success.

A frequent cause is that the folder listing includes a network folder that
is not available. If that's the case, try Disconnecting from that folder
(using Windows Explorer).
