Dumb newbie question about checking mail

In Outlook Express the option to check mail every so often is readily
visible. I don't see such an option in Outlook. I'm trying to migrate
to Outlook for home use and I'd like to hear a notification when new
mail comes in, but I don't get new mail unless I click on send/receive.

Go to "Tools", click on "Options", then under "Preferences", choose "e-mail
options".

Under "Message Handling" make sure to check "Display a Notification Message
when new mail
arrives", then click on "Advanced E-mail Options".

Under the Header "When New Mail Arrives", check boxes "Play a Sound" Then,
OK everything as each box closes, and that should do it for you.

The wording might be somewhat different depending on which version of
Outlook you are using.

Thanks. Will that cause Outlook XP to receive mail whenever it comes
without me having to click send/receive? Is there no option to set it
to check for mail every 15 minutes or so?

Tools->Send/Receive->Send/Receive Settings->Edit Send/Receive Settings. On
the first page of the window, you can set your polling interval there - it
will cause an automatice send/receive when you open Outlook.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
