Duplicate *.doc file attached

When a friend of mine emails me an attachment of a *.doc file
he seems almost always to unintentionally also send me another
file with the same name, but only 448 bytes long. My friend
uses a Mac. Is this normal or viral?

I think it's normal. The same thing happens when a friend of mine (also
using a Mac) sends me photos (JPEGs). She is unaware of sending more than
one file, and the second one appears to be empty (or at least it displays
nothing but a red X). In this case, the files are 1.78 or 1.79 KB
