Duplicate Figures with Captions

B

Barb R.

I have a Word 2003 document with the same figure in 2 sections of a document.
We want the figures to have the same figure number in the first section as
they have in the subsequent sections. We are using the caption feature and
the figure numbers are automatically being incremented.

Can someone assist?

In the second location, use a cross reference to the Figure Number in the
first location.

Doug,

That helps with part of my problem. If I want to display Figure 1 in two
different locations, I now know how to include the label, but how do I
duplicate the figure. Is it done the same way?

Thanks,
Barb

When you create a cross-reference, a bookmark is created around the label.
You can extend the bookmark to include the figure and caption. Select the
figure and caption, go to Insert | Bookmark, check the box for "Hidden
bookmarks" and select the radio button for "Location." The bookmark that is
highlighted will be the one that has already been assigned to your caption
label. Click on "Add," and it will be extended to cover the current
selection.

Note that you have to have first inserted the cross-reference in order to
create the bookmark. A simpler method, however, would be to select the
figure and caption and insert a bookmark manually (labeling it with a
human-readable name), then insert a cross-reference to the content of that
bookmark.

Is there any way to cross-reference actual figures in the document as well?
It would be great if I only had to put the figure (picture) in the document
once, and reference it from there. If the figure/picture was updated, the
other figures would be updated as well. I want to put all the figures in
the doc they are discussed and then again in a Supplementary Table of
Figures.

Certainly. Select the figure and apply a bookmark (Insert | Bookmark). Then
Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to Bookmark text. Note that
cross-references don't update automatically; you have to Ctrl+A and F9 to
update them.

I don't think you understood my question. I'm already doing something like
that for the caption for the figure. I want to do the same thing for the
figure, which in this case is a picture. Can it be done?

And that's what I explained. Select the picture itself and insert a
bookmark. Then cross-reference the content of that bookmark.

Suzanne,

I tried to do that before and was starting the bookmark name with a number.
Apparently, WORD doesn't like that. When i started the bookmark name with
a character, I could create the bookmark.

Now I have another question. When I try to insert the picture in the new
location using the bookmark option, I'm using

Cross-Reference
Reference Type: Bookmark

What should I select for "Insert Reference to"

Thanks again,
Barb

Thank you for your patience. Can you assist with a word merge question that
I've posted on here as well?
