Duplicate holiday entries

G

Greg

I normally use Entourage but I need to maintain iCal because that is how I sync with iPhone. I keep getting duplicate holiday entries in entourage, which are then added to the Entourage calendar on iCal, even though I only imported holidays in to Entourage once. This seems to happen randomly. The last time the computer added a new set of duplicate holidays I accidentally opened iCal, even though I normally use Entourage. I do not sync through .mac. Does anyone know how to prevent this?

I've also tried deleting duplicate holidays, but can't accomplish this because the only instructions to do this depend on the fact that categories were established for the holiday entries, and I don't use categories for any of my calendar entries in Entourage.

This script did work to delete a doubled entry, but I have four and five duplicates that have arisen over time. The script did not work for those at all, it simply didn't recognize them.

Any clue on what is causing this? I have searched high and low and no one seems to have an answer.

This is a bug in the SyncServices between ENtourage and iCal. It affects
all-day events.
A real pain (and I'm not quite sure who's to blam at this point),

You should know that Microsoft's utterly-crappy web interface to these
news groups doesn't include the "References" header that all prper news
group posts should have, causing those of us using *real* news readers
such as MT-NewsWatcher to have absolutely no freaking way of following
references! The idiocy is just bewildering! Please do the rest of us a
huge favor: use a real news client such as MT-NewsWatcher, Unison,
MacSOUP, etc.

Hehehehehe :-> It would indeed make our life (well at least mine ;-) ) a
LOT easier if everybody could use normal newsreader applications.

On the other hand, the web interface is improving. The html tags that
were littering the posts are gone.
The two remaining big issues for me are:
- hard-wrapping paragraphs at 80 characters or less
- making it obvious how to reply to a specific post (in which case the
threading actually works) instead of submitting a new reply to the
thread (without targetting a specific post).

Okay. I just deleted all the duplicates, many by hand, and now I have three and four duplicates again of the holiday events. I am not syncing with .mac, only syncing between iCal and Entourage. How can I turn off the holidays? There is absolutely no instruction anywhere that I can find, only about importing holidays.

Turn off Sync Services until it's fixed.

I can't turn off sync services because then my Entourage wouldn't sync with iCal, which is what I have to use to sync my iPhone.

and what good does it do to turn it off "until it's fixed" if no one tells me how to fix it?

Hi Greg!

Sync Services with Entourage 2008 is "broken". It partially works but
has problems as you've seen.

Until Microsoft (or Apple -- I don't know who's responsible for fixing
this) fixes the problem you'll either have to live with the problems it
causes or live without syncing.

Many of us hope the fixes are included in the Office 12.0.1 update
slated for release around March 11, but none of us knows for sure. Keep
your eyes open for details of that update.

Hope this helps!

Except that I'm using Entourage 2004.

That would have been helpful to know when you posted your question.

You need to delete all duplicate holidays in both Entourage Calendar and
iCal. Turn off Sync Services while you are doing this. Once both calendars
have no holidays, import them back into Entourage and THEN turn on Sync
Services.

I'm not sure how iCal handles adding Holidays, but you might check that out
to see if it adds them automatically somehow. If it does, then don't add
them to Entourage and let Entourage sync from iCal.

All-day events also induce a similar issue with SyncServices. They
self-duplicate for no apparent reason.

What I do for that is that I always assign a category to all my events.
Duplicated events do not ahve one so all I have to do is to create a
custom view for all events, sort by category and once in a while, slpy
trash all events without category.

A bit tedious, but it works,

Yes I've noticed that in all day events. It will be fine for a period
and that at some point duplicates of all day events display. i'll tend
to only notice this by accident when I'm scanning my calendar so I
generally have no idea when it occurred or thus why. Totally annoying
amongst other things with Entourage sync services.

Yes I do exactly the same thing. Its just I never know, until I
accidentally discover them, that they're there. And I have no idea why
one day they're not and another day they are.

If I just use iCal and Addressbook I have found it seems to work
pretty flawlessly. Its just I loose all the power I've relied on
Entourage for over 4 years and before that Outlook. Its such a mess.
