Duplicate mail from POP3

I have a problem with duplicate mails in Outlook 2002 when accessing my 1and1
POP3 mail account. I do have Office XP SP3 installed.

I previously read the following advice on this board from neo (my additional
comments in square brackets) on things that could cause duplicate mails:

1) Two or more accounts that check the same mailbox. [no, I only have 1
account]
2) Two or more inbox rules that act on the same message. [no rules set up]
3) Antivirus/Antispam software that doesn't allow Outlook/Outlook Express to
complete the mail check cycle complete. (e.g. the antivirus/antispam causes
a timeout, so Outlook/OE doesn't logout of the mailbox correctly. Next time
in you get a repeat message.) [I am using Norton AV - how do I check if this
would cause a problem? I only upgraded Norton2003 to Norton2005 recently -
could this be linked?]
4) Some form of corruption in the mailbox. (e.g. messages with the message
id. you might be able to clear this if the ISP offers a web interface to
the mail account. otherwise the isp has to correct by removing the
offending message.) [I do have a web interface I could use, but how would I
know which was the offending message?]

Thanks.
