Duplicate posts

Gang:

It seems we are getting more duplicate posts than normal.
By duplicate posts, I refer to ones from the same person
with the same subject line and question within minutes of
each other.

In the past this happens every once in awhile but it
seems to happen more frequently lately.

Is there something wrong with the newsgroup software or
is it just "user error"? Any ideas?

It couldn't be "the newsgroup software" becuase everyone uses different
software.

Theory: Microsoft has worked pretty darned hard over recent years to make
this kind of "immediate" help available to as many people as possible. In
addition, they have created web interfaces to these newsgroups, and promoted
the newsgroups as a useful "HelpDesk" (if you will). As a result, more and
more of the less-well-versed in computing are able to access these groups.
Hence, the increase in mistakes made by users in using the various types of
software available.

I haven't seen that problem. Maybe your ISP is having the problem.

Rick: I think part of it is people don't know how to use the various
newsgroup interfaces and newsreaders. I also think part of it is
impatience, thinking they should get an answer within minutes. And part of
it is they think that if they post more than once, someone will be bound to
answer.

IMHO, it's mostly stupidity. ;-)

Many of us don't go through an ISP. We use the MS news servers.
And yes, the problem exits.

Another possibility: Some of these interfaces are web page forms. Web Forms
have latency issues, in that it takes time for the form to process over the
Internet once the Submit button is clicked. Often, people will think it
hasn't worked and click it again. If the software doesn't account for this,
you get duplicates.

Many of the "duplicate" posts have little changes in them, which means
people are reposting, also.

Yes, it is a software problem when using the online interface. Many times
after you post it returns an error that it was not successful. But it was
and the user does not know that, hence the repost.
