Duplicate Unique IDs

A colleague of mine has copied some standard tasks from a template into his
existing plan as new rows. He has noticed though that he now has completely
duplicate rows of these - ie the ID number is the same, the task data is the
same and very worryingly the Unique IDs are teh same - how is this possible??

Since it is basically impossible to have duplicate Unique IDs, I'm real
curious how he copied the data. Is he in a Project Server environment?
If not, I'd sure like to see the file.

This is a non-server based file. I believe the tasks were simply copied from
one plan to another. I can send the file if you want.
