duration and work tracking

I can't seem to figure out how projects tracks things. If I set a project
duration to be 10 days and the work for that project to be 240 hours but the
task ends up being put on hold for a few days and starting again, changing
the actual duration also changes the actual work. I don't want it to do that.

Changing actual duration suggests that actual progress was made. If a task
is put on hold then:

Update the task to show progress so far
If the delay is a number of days, set the timescale to day by day, if weeks
then week by week
Click and drag (or I prefer to say rip and drag!) the remaining part of the
task to when the work will resume. project automatically leaves actual work
where it is and only moves remaining work/duration.

Actual Duration will remain the same, but the finish date changes and there
is a resume date for when the split part restarts.
