Duration showing incorrect figures

Manal

Hi there,

I have the following situation. Working days being from a Sunday through to
a Thursday -

Mother Task - 15.38days - 28/12/08 to 14/01/09
Child Task 1 - 8days - 01/01/09 to 12/01/09
Child Task 2 - 8days - 28/12/08 to 06/01/09
Child Task 3 - 3days - 12/01/09 to 14/01/09

My question here is that I believe the Mother Task should show 14days. Im
not sure where its picking up the extra 1.38 days from?!?

Some direction on this would be very much appreciated,
Thanks
Manal

Thanks for the feedback.
I dont quite get your comment 'Its a summary'. What are you referring to?

I have switched on a time view. Child Tasks 1 and 2 start at 08:00 and
finish at 17:00, so they look fine. Child Task 3 is set from 12/01/09 08:00
to 14/01/09 14:00. This is weird as it should be like the others. Have tried
changing it, but then the start time gets pushed to 11:00. If I force it back
to 08:00 the duration becomes 3.38 days.

Default start times are 08:00 to 17:00.
Thanks again

Hi Manal

Check your project calendar time in Tools > change working time. Also check
the default time for the day and the week in Tools > options > calendars

In MS Project, Mother task is called 'Summary task' aand Child task is
called 'Sub task'.

I hope it helps.

Hi Vanita,

Thanks for that.

I have checked both these areas, Default working times are from 08:00 to
17:00. I have also checked it through 'Change Working Time' which also shows
the same values.

Thnx for the correction on naming, will be sure to refer to it in that
manner in future.

Thanks Mike, some helpful items there,

Unfortunately though I cant seem to locate the problem.

The Summary Task Value coming through just doesnt make sense. I think I'll
keep playing round with it some more, but definately wont say no to any ideas
coming in :)

Hi Manal,

It appears as though it is Task 3 causing the problem. You note
that you have tried to manually change the start date/time without
success. Is there a resource assigned to that particular task whose
working calendar is different? Is there a task calendar assigned?

Try splitting your screen (Window > Split) and look at resource
information including assignment units and work.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Remember that duration of a summary is defined as the amount of calendar
time between the moment when the earliest starting subtask begins (date and
time) and the moment when the latest finishing subtask ends (again, date and
time). Setting your date format to one that displays both the date and time
of the tasks' start and end might help you track down what's happening.
Does the first task start at the start of the workkday? Does the last task
end at the end of the workday?
