Duration vs Actual Work

If a task will exceed the Duration, I would assume that the Duration would
need to increase. However, when I change the Duration of the task to reflect
the new estimate (Since I don’t know how long the task will take, I’ll enter
it as an estimated value, e.g. “16 hrs?â€), the Actual Work changes, also.
This doesn’t make sense since the Actual Work should reflect the work that
has actually gone into the task.

What am I missing? Thanks

Hi Mike,
If you increase the Duration of the task while its % Complete is 100%,
Project understands the increased Duration as actual. You have to increase,
not the Duration, but the Remaining Duration (or the Remaining Work).
Hope this helps,

Thanks for your reply, Gérard.

Percent complete is showing as 0%. How does this figure in?

Mike,

In which view do you enter the new estimate ?
What are the values for:
- Duration
- Actual Duration
- Actual Work
- Remaining Work
- %Complete
- %Work Complete

I entered the new estimate to the task in the Gantt Chart view.

The values are:
- Duration (new): 120 hrs?
- Actual Duration: 0 hrs
- Actual Work: 88 hrs
- Remaining Work: 16.13 hrs
- %Complete: 0%
- %Work Complete: 85%

Mike,
The two zero values are very strange. With the same other values, I got
%Complete = 73% and Actual Duration = 88h.
If I increase the Duration, the actual Work remains at the same value : 88h,
and the other values are recalculated correctly.
What are your Project version and Service Pack ?
