dynamic embedded reference, table of contents & figures missing

When viewing a document table of contents is missing and is replaced by "
{TOC\o"1-3"\h\z\u}" and similarly for all figure and page referencing...
Strangely printing is ok- but viewing is impossible...

Any ideas...?
I am using Word 2002 SP 3 in office XP.

On the Tools menu, click Options. On the View tab, clear the option to
show "Field codes" and then click OK.
