E-mail address books

C

Chuck Owings

I just installed XP on my computer and had to reformat the
drive. I did a full backup but didn't address my E-mail
address book in Outlook Express. Does anyone know where
that address book would be in my backup? I need the file
location and any info on doing the conversion to Office
Outlook.

This is a group to support Outlook from the Office group of programs.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and is a quite different
program despite its similar name..

You will probably get a faster and more expert answer if you post this to an
outlook express news group.

Try posting in one of these newsgroups:

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.mail.mac for the Macintosh version of OE

You can find more help on OE here:

That won't work. You cannot export from OE to Outlook.
If the OP needs his OE Contacts in Outlook, he needs to ask in an OE group
how to migrate to OE on a new installation. Once he does, he can then use
Outlook's import function to import from OE.

Yr right of course, I was thinking of the mail;
You export, within OE, the address book to a file, then import that file in
OL
Or you can import the address book in OL
The OE address book is a *.wab (Windows Address Book) file, by default
located
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express

Convince me it can.

I used a spare PC, with OL2K and OE 6, under Win2kpro. None of these apps
had email accounts configured nor did the wab contain any addresses.
Fired up the wab, start/run, added test addresses, and closed
Fired up OL, used import, to import OE address book.
All wab test addressess were successfully imported to Contacts.
As to proof, I'm not sure how to provide that, but will happilly do so if
you advise on method of providing it

Well of course. That's exactly what I said.
You can only import a WAB to OE. After you do, you can then import from OE
to Outlook.
Outlook cannot import a WAB file directly.

I didnt import the wab to OE, leastways not that I'm aware
At no time was OE running. The only apps I ran/started were the wab,
directly from start/run, then OL

Of course you did.
Why else do you think importing from OE brought in the contents of the WAB?
The points are:
1. Outlook cannot import a WAB file directly. It can only import the main
Contacts Folder from OE. Only OE can import a WAB file.
2. OE cannot export Contacts to Outlook.

Outlook didn't import the WAB directly. At no time did you get a dialogue
box that requested you to browse to a WAB. Since OE's address book is the
WAB, and you imported OE's address book from OL, OL was telling OE to read
the WAB and send over the addresses in it. OE didn't need to be running.
When you entered your addresses into the WAB for the first time, it was
created in the default location where OE's routines expected it to be. Or
so it seems to me.

D

DL

Which seems to me to be the same as importing directly from the wab.
Or to put it another way, isnt all this just a 'play on words'?

D

DL

Sorry If this has double posted;
I assumed this was as a result of the wab being in the default OE location.
Having said that it appears to me, this thread, to nothing more than a 'play
on words'

R

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]

Not really.
People often copy their WAB to a new installation and are stymied because
they can find no way to import it into Outlook.
Accordingly, telling them they can is not correct. They can only import it
into OE. Telling them they can export from OE to Outlook is likewise not
correct.
