E-mail doesn't get sent

When my outbox is empty, if i create a new e-mail and send it, it gets save
to my outbox with no "Sent" date and then when I click "Send/Receive" is does
not get sent. As long as I leave that first e-mail in my outobx, all
subsequent messages are dated and are sent correctly. If I delete that first
e-mail, the next one I send will have no "Sent" date and will not geet sent.
Any ideas why? I am using Outlook 2003 w/SP2.
