E-mail Notifcation without running outlook 2003

what I am after is a way whether this is another program that polls for new
e-mails from account server and downloads them, without running outlook.
Which runs in the taskbar.

An example of this software would be similar to Notify.exe which relates to
groupwise which runs in the taskbar, showing an envelope when a new mail
arrives.

Outlook 2003 can be configured to minimize to the system tray. (right click
on icon next to clock and select hide when minimized)

I don't know of any software like that for Outlook.
