E-Mailing Fax with Images Hangs

E

Eric Dropps

Hello,
Having a bit of a problem with sending faxes through outlook via Shared
Fax Service.
Faxes OK outside of outlook.

Faxes are fine unless they have an image attached/inside them. When I hit
send, Microsoft Photo Editor opens up in the taskbar (with some .jpg image,
I assume a temp) and it will hang there until I force it closed.

I have read the only article I found on Google (oddly enough, they all had
input from you, Russ) and have had no luck.

FYI

Windows 2000 SBS Server (fax)
Client is XP SP1, Office 2002
Exchange server in use
Fax Mail Transport is FIRST is list & Default.
Have tried the command
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_PrintTo /pt "%1" "%2"
"%3" "%4" (even a reboot after)
..GIF,.TIF,.TIFF,.JPG,.JPEG All set to MS Picture/Fax Viewer

Hope you can help!

What is the format of the attachment you are trying to fax?
Is your fax software the client for SBS or Windows XP Fax?

the 'attachment' is an image in the email.

using the shared fax on our SBS server.

Sorry for the delay, I have been on vacation!

No problem with a delay. I'm in no hurry.
I do need a bit more accuracy in the answers, however.
I understand the attachment is an image. I need to know the file type of the
image, how it is attached to the message, and the format of the message.
I was also asking about the client fax software, not the server software.

in this case, it is a bitmap image inserted as part of a signature (our
company logo). the message is in HTML format. the 'client software' is the
" Fax Mail Transport" of Outlook.

to refresh, it's all good as long as I don't include the picture, that's
when it messes up, ms photo editor opens, apparently freezes, and the fax
ultimately fails.

That's because the Fax Service has no rendering capability so your operating
system must have a printto verb defined for the image file type you are
trying to render. A BMP file usually requires this printto verb:
rundll32.exe <Drive>:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_PrintTo /pt
"%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"

However, I doubt you will like the results since every image is rendered
separately as a full page and will take forever to transmit.

My advice is just lose the graphics. This is just a fax.
