E-mails appear marked as "Read" when they aren't

Check the settings under Tools->Options->Other->Reading
Pane
I believe the default is to mark the selection as "read"
when the selection changes. There is also the setting to
mark selection as "read" after a certain length of time
being viewed in the Reading Pane. I know that I personally
like to have both not selected. Hope this helps.
