E-mails delete automatically when closed

How do I stop received e-mails from deleting automatically when closed? As
soon as the e-mails are opened and read, I'll close them. Before they would
stay as an opened message in my in-box. Now they simply disappear, not even
stopping in my deleted folder.

They are not being deleted unless you expressly configured a rule to do so.
See how your view is configured.
It is probably filtered to show only unread messages.
