Earned value in portfolio analyzer

Sergio

Hi,

We would like to create a project portfolio analyzer that shows the EVA
analysis for the different projects, showing both the data and a graph.
Not all the field available in the Earned Value view in the project center
are available in the view definition page.
Should we create claculated fields or extend the cube?
Anyone has done this before? Any advice?

Thanks

Sergio

Hi Sergio,

I would personally create the fields. Unless you are a developer, extending
the cube has been very hard, at least for us. Creating fields as an admin
while creating a new view will let you control the calcuations. Be careful
of how you write your formulas, though.

In fact, we have a Project cube extending specialist working with us, and
after several months, our cube is still not extended correctly.

Sergio:

Project Server's Portfolio Analyzer is used to look at work, cost and
availability across both Project Portfolio and Resource dimensions. You can
extend it to include all types of data, but Earned Value isn't
characteristically candidate information for dimensioning, therefore it's
best depicted in the Project Center or through SQL reporting.

Gary,

I know EVA es not well suited to be used in Portfolio Analyzer.
What we would like to do is to show an EVA graph.
We would like to let management to have a fast method to see how projects
are evolving.

Thanks

Sergio,

It is tricky but it can be done. I worked as a consultant for LMR
solutions (a Microsoft partner in San Diego) for 3 years and we were doing EV
charts with PA the whole time. I wasn't the developer, so I couldn't tell
you how it was done, but it has been done and it was very robust and esay to
use. We did EV charts, SPI, CPI, CV%, SV% etc for all the projects,
departments and Division. You could contact them at www.lmrsolutions.com.
