Edit last name into separate field

i have inherited a file in which the name is one field. I need to
separate the last name (family name) into a separate field for merging
and sorting purposes.

The best way I can figure how to do that is to change the last space
in the name into a tab and then use that tab to define a new field.
But I don't know any way to find the last space in a line.

I would appreciate know how to search right to left in an English
language file, or otherwise separating the last name.

if I were you, I would import the info into Excel and then do the division
there.
