Edit Links will not operate

I have created a powerpoint presentation that generates a number of
graphs via links from an excel spreadsheet.

Both files are in the same folder - the graphs do not automatically
update and the <Edit><Links> is not lit

However if I double click on the graph and open it up it does update

Any idea?

How did you create the links in the first place?

And what version of PPT/Excel?
