Edit Message option not available in Outlook

rdarmand

I recently received an email from a friend who had marked
the email private and set importance to high. I replied
to his message with no problem, my reply incorporating
his original - and, it appears, keeping his security and
importance settings, which didn't really matter to me.

However, after sending my reply, I decided I wanted to
edit it; and this is where I ran into problems. I double-
click on the message in the list, then pick the Edit menu
from the top of the screen . but the "edit message"
option is not available. It is light gray and unpickable.
This is maddening. What could the problem be?

Furthermore, I cannot change the security setting
("private"). Any ideas?

Yuo have answered your own question. Reread what you posted about Private
and not being able to edit the message - then use the Help file to read
about the Private designation.

Thank you for answering my question.

I see now that marking a message private prevents
someone -- even me -- from subsequently editing the
message. What I don't see is why this was set up this
way. The two objectives of privacy and preventing editing
are not necessarily conjoined.

Is there no way around this?

No - not in Outlook.

The purpose is to keep the original text as original, as in where you are
reaching a mutual agreement and the terms should not be changed by one party
or the other, for example. Very useful (although not foolproof) for legal
negotiations, contracts, etc.
