"edit points" How to get them?

Previously I was able to use "edit points" on a line, arrow etc by right
clicking on the line and selecting "edit points." In Word 2007 I select the
line, then try to select the "edit points" option on the Ribbon under Format
/ Insert Shapes. On the right of Insert Shapes is "edit points." That
symbol is not highlighted. I tried to click on it but nothing happens. I
tried adding "edit points" to my Quick Access Bar but it still will not
become active, and nothing happens if I click on it. Previously I did not
need to use a canvas. How do I get to activate the "edit points" option?
