Editing document problems

When editing a document, I often find that the format
will not allow me to make changes without erasing the
subsequent type. I can not type a normal sentence
without erasing the subsequent sentence. Does anyone
know what causes this and what I can do to get the page
back to normal typing mode?
Grateful for any help you can give me.

Hi, Maxine. Turn off "overtype" mode by pressing the Insert key or by
double-clicking the "OVR" button at the bottom of your screen (just
above the Task Bar).
