Which version of Word are you using?
If later than '97, try under File => New selecting your template and
checking the box for "New Template" when you create a new file. Make your
modifications to that new template and use File => Save As to save it in a
folder in your templates folder. Give it a unique name. If you name that
folder to be the same as the tab that you found your original template
under, your template should show up under that tab next time you look.
