Editing text in Form Validation Error

Thank you very much in advance all for any help!

FIRST QUESTION:
I have certain required fields in a form. If the field
is 'First Name' FP's way of validating is that I dictate
there has to be say 2 characters in that field or there is
an error message. (If I just tick 'Required', nothing
happens.) Firstly, am I correct here? Is there something
else I can do?
So I get a boring pile of bullet pointed text that reads:
Please enter at least 2 characters in the "Country" field.
Please enter at least 7 characters in
the "Contactinfo_Email" field.
The first "How you heard about the contest" option is not
a valid selection. Please choose one of the other options -

I'd much prefer it to say if the field isn't filled in "We
need to know your name" or "How did you hear about us
again?"
Is there a way of getting at the page to alter anything?
Or can't you do that because it does't 'exist' until it's
generated as a specific error?

Thanks again!

No, I think you've got it, unless you want to edit for
certain charactes. To do that, in the Text Box Validation
dialog box, set Data Type to Text and then select the
check boxes you want.

By filling in the Display Name box, you can change the
field name that appears in the message, but that's all.

If you want greater flexibility than FrontPage Field
Validation provides, you need to write (or find) your own
scripts in JavaScript (to run on the browser) or in ASP or
ASP.NET (to run on the Web server).
