Editing Web Pages

I've looked at the solution given in Publisher Help regarding updating pages.
None of the solutions offer give any resolution to what I am experiencing.
From what I have read, a number of others are finding it quite difficult, if
not impossible to update their pages. I would like for someone to give a
clear-cut response for how to make changes to pages in Publisher 2007.
NOTE: This does not work as it is part of the Help menu- Publish only what
has changed In Windows XP
On the File menu, click Publish to the Web.
In the Publish to the Web dialog box, click My Network Places.
Double-click the shortcut to the folder on the Web server or network server
where you published your Web site.
Double-click the folder where you want to save the file.
In the File name box, type the name of the file you are updating, and then
click Save
Is there any real help in this area and if not, why not just say so and
point seekers to where we can get it.

Thanks

I'm a Publisher 2000 user which after creating the webpages a ftp is used to
upload the files to the server.

Some folks with Publisher 2003 and 2007 use a ftp to get their websites up
to the server.

If you wish to try using a ftp, FileZilla is an excellent FREE program.

FileZilla Client is the one to get.

Hello David,

It's not my intention to disrespect anyone there, however, it is quite
disappointing to keep be led to dead ends. I apologize if my words seemed to
be harsh, it's just that nothing is working like it says it is supposed to.

I am curious. Do you really expect anyone to jump up and try to help you
after you disrespect everyone here who volunteers their time to try to help?
How is that working for you?

Perhaps you would be better off calling MSFT and paying for real help.

You have a good day.

Hello Don,

Thank you for your response. I was using 2003 prior to the upgrade and yes
I did use an FTP (Core) to upload the pages after editing which was
relatively a simple process, however, in 2007 it doesn't seem to work in like
manner, which is why I am having such difficulty trying to figure out the
process.

Ok, let's start over then.

From your post to Don, it appears that you did recently upgrade to Pub 2007
from 2003. Did you also *upgrade* from XP to Vista? Or did you upgrade to
IE7 from IE6? In both cases the uploading process has changed, and that
might account for your difficulties. Also if you ever tried HTTP uploading
things have gotten further complicated and never in any directions from MSFT
has it been explained how this process is dependent upon the use of
FrontPage Sever Extensions. Also, FWIW, MSFT HELP materials in Publisher
2007 are dismal, so I am not surprised that they frustrate you. In general
MSFT has really dropped the ball on the HELP content both locally and
on-line, change the processes with Vista and IE7, plus each web host has
different root directories, so that is part of the reason it is so difficult
to help people with this process...there are too many variables. And like
you, much of the time the user does not post all the relevant information,
leaving us guessing. However with all that said, here is the most recent
article by MSFT that deals with Publisher 2007:

Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA100947601033.aspx

As you are used to using FTP uploading protocol, I would skip the
instructions for HTTP uploading protocol, and thus hoping to do incremental
uploading. Instead plan on uploading all new web files each time you update
your site.

If you scroll down the above referenced article to the 'Publish a Web site
by using FTP' section, you will see a plus sign by 'How?' click that plus
sign to expand the content. Therein describes the difference in how you use
FTP uploading in XP vs. Vista. Now, others have figured out how to do this,
but I personally think it is not the best or easiest choice if you are
indeed using FTP uploading.

Instead I would suggest that you consider downloading and installing the
free FTP client FileZilla:
http://filezilla-project.org/ It is likely to be easier for you in the long
run. By using a dedicated FTP client you will be able to more easily upload
your web files and manage the other files on your web directory. This will
however require you to not only invest a little time setting up FileZilla
and learning how to use it, but also changing your workflow in how you
produce and then upload new Publisher web files.

Instead of trying to directly upload your files when you Publish to the Web
from Publisher, instead direct those files to your local computer where you
can easily find them. There is a section in the above referenced article
that explains this: 'Publish a Web site to a folder on your computer'. Then
you open FileZilla, make the connection to your web host root directory, and
simply drag the new files from your local computer to the proper location on
your root directory. Don't forget that you need to upload both the
'index.htm' file and the 'index_files' folder when you update. Also, where
you upload those files will vary from host to host. Sometimes it is a folder
called 'public_html" or something else. Your webhost provides that
information.

In general when you drag and drop, or copy and paste the new web files to
your host, the old ones are overwritten. However sometimes you may have to
delete the old ones. That is another advantage of the two step approach of
uploading. By logging on to your host with FileZilla you can see all the
files and folders on your root directory and more easily manage them. Be
careful about deleting any file or folder other than your Publisher files.
Your host will have other files and folders there that are involved with
your webstats and other host features. One other advantage to using
FileZilla is if you ever want to make external files available for
downloading from your site, you can create subfolders on your root directory
and upload your pdf files or such to that folder, and then link to those
files from your website.

Now you can do all of that using Windows Explorer after mapping the network
drive, but I still believe it is better to use a FileZilla. So if you want
to pursue that option I would also suggest that you download all the support
documentation on this page and study the directions:
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/documentation/
It might take you a bit of time to learn how to use FileZilla but it is a
snap to use after you do. And finally here is a link to some more directions
on how to use FileZilla that has some screenshots:
Reference: Aplus.net: How do I upload with Filezilla:
http://www.apluskb.com/scripts/How_do_I_upload_with_answer3668.html
Don't forget that where you upload your files will most likely vary from
where you upload if you are using Aplus, so adapt the directions as per your
host.

I hope these directions get you started on the right path to figuring out
how to update your Publisher web files. Some of these things we can't do for
you. You have to invest some time learning the methods and how they apply to
your host. Also don't forget to check the FAQs on your host site or read
their instructions on how and where to upload for more insight. Good luck.
