eliminate white edges when adding border or graphics

When I add a background or want to put an autoshape that goes from edge to
edge in word it looks fine on the screen, but in print view and when printed
there is a white edge. How do I eliminate that?

You don't. Every printer has an irreducible minimum unprintable area
dictated by mechanical paper handling constraints. The only way to print
"Full bleed" is to print on oversized paper and trim; even commercial
printers have to do this. Some photo printers can print "borderless" but
usually only on smaller paper sizes (in special carriers), and even so a
specific setting (in printer Properties) may be required.
