em dash

I am trying to make em dashes in text. I did the changes so that 2 hyphens
should change automatically to an em dash, but it doesn't work consistently.
I don't have a numeric keyboard. I know I need to do something custom but
can't figure out how to do it. Thanks for your help.

Its been so long since I used an em dash
but there two additional types of dashes other than a plain dash
an en dash and a em dash.

one is created by holding down option key then hitting dash
one is created by holding down shift -option then hitting dash

I'm doing this in html only to show the differences.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

If you specify what type of system, what OS & what version of Word someone
may be able to provide more explicit direction - it sounds like you may not
even be using a Mac which is what this group is primarily for.

I didn't realize this was a Mac group. No, I'm not using a Mac. Not sure how
I ended up here but I'll try to find my way out!

Hello Peg,

It's not your fault: it's a charming foible of Microsoft's web interface,
which I guess you used. Mac versions of Word differ variously from PC
versions. Although several people here use both PCs and Macs and may give
you an answer soon, it's likely that more people in a PC group have
experienced your specific problem. Here's where all the groups are listed:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx

Having said that, albeit I'm on a Mac, I configured Word to substitute an en
dash when I type two hyphens in succession and an em dash when I type a dash
followed by an equal sign (simple, because the keys are next to each other).

This is done via Tools menu => AutoCorrect. Check first to see what's in
there -- I think the en dash item may be there by default (but you can of
course delete any of them and substitute your own. In fact one of the first
things I did to Word to bend it to my will was to delete almost everything
in there so that I could more easily see the entries I need to check. I
think Microsoft uses focus groups of 13-year-old unmarried mothers, all
victims of the modern education system, to determine what's put in there.
Whoever they are, they don't have the same foibles as I do...)

Cheers,

Clive Huggan

In that case it would be Alt instead of option.
I don't see an "option" key. Is there another name for it?
