Email masking

How do I mask my real email address with an email alias? I have an address that is currently being forwarded to my .mac email address ([email protected] diverting to (e-mail address removed)). Previously in Outlook, I was able to simply change the email address in the account settings so it appeared as though the forwarding address was the actual email address; however when I attempt to do a similar thing in Entourage, I receive an error that states the address isn't one of my addresses. Forgive me, I am a recent convert to Mac but would appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

If I understand your question correctly, after you configure you .mac
account in Entourage, simply go to "Tools - Accounts", edit your .mac POP
account, and on the Account Settings tab that follows, change the "E-mail
address" displayed on that page to whatever you like.

Hi Roberto...thank you very much for your reply. I agree, the steps you suggest should work but unfortunately do not. It is when I change the email address there that I receive an error that the address is not one of my addresses so is unable to send. I do note however that you mentioned to update my ".mac POP" account. I used the automated set up when installing Entourage and it set it up as an IMAP account so I just now created a POP .mac account however am still receiving the same error. Any other ideas?

That can work with POP accounts but often not with IMAP and Exchange
accounts. You'll probably run into other problems unless you have your
own domain. Here's why:

More and more, E-mail services are fighting harder to prevent spam.
Spoofing a From address is one of the oldest and most used spam tricks.
But that's also what you're trying to do.

The first thing many E-mail service providers do is prevent its own
customers from spoofing their From address. That prevents spammers from
using their services.

The second thing they can do is block mail that *says* it's from the
"nifty.com" domain but is really coming from the "scummy.com" servers.
If you attempt to send an E-mail address from one domain (mycompany.com)
through another domain (personalaccount.com) then you stand a good
chance of your recipients never seeing it because spam filters will
block it.

Some E-mail providers allow you to alter your From address but even ISPs
like Comcast are requiring that you authenticate (enter a real name and
password) before you can send a spoofed address.

Try creating a send-only POP account:

1. Create an account with the same settings as your MobileMe account but
select POP instead of IMAP when offered the choice. Give it a name such
as "My alternate From account". Be sure to verify all of the advanced
settings as well.

Note: This will *only* work if you have a valid me.com alias already set
up in your account. If you're trying to use
"(e-mail address removed)" through MobileMe then you can not do
this. MobileMe requires that you use a legitimate MobileMe address or
alias. You will have to use account settings from another account that
you already have.

2. Under the Account Settings tab uncheck the option to 'Include this
account in my "Send & Receive All" schedule'. (No need to check this
account twice for new mail and it could cause duplicates.)

3. Change the E-mail address to the one you prefer others to see. Save
and close.

4. Test sending from this second account. When composing new messages or
replying you'll select this account in the From drop down menu at the
top of the message.

At this point your message may send or it may fail. If it fails then
your ISP is probably not allowing spoofed From addresses. If it sends
but you don't receive it then it may be getting blocked by spam filters.

I suggest you look into a couple of options.

First, MobileMe offers its mac.com and me.com account holders up to five
aliases that you can configure on its website. You'll always have one
alias that you give out publicly and all mail will come to your MobileMe
account. If it begins getting spam then you can delete that alias and
create a new one to give out publicly.

Look into paying for a domain and an E-mail hosting service. By doing
this you have control over as many E-mail addresses that you care to
have. You can usually forward those on the server to any other account
you wish. And because you have control over the domain then you can send
from any address you like.

By the way, none of what I've said is Mac specific. Many recent changes
in E-mail security are now coming into play by many E-mail service
providers.

Hope this helps!

I should clarify this:

The *type* of account usually makes no difference. The E-mail service
provider chooses to limit or allow E-mail addresses unrelated to the
account.

Bill is correct in stating the risks of what you're trying to do... While
answering your original post I myself was in doubt of whether to mention the
other issues you'd possibly be having if succeeding.

Why don't you try approaching this in a slightly different way? You have
emails from your domain (mydomain.com) being forwarded to your .mac account.
Here's an idea - see my sample screenshot at:

http://logsat.com/images/newsgroups-entourage.png

These are the settings for a quick sample I just put together, assuming that
"netwide.net" in the sample is the domain that is forwarding emails to my
..mac address. This account checks the .mac for the POP emails, however its
Outgoing SMTP server is configured to use netwide.net's mail server, *not*
the .mac servers. In the "email-address" I configured my netwide.net address
which *is* accepted by my mail3.netwide.net server. This allows me to
receive my .mac emails, my netwide.net emails forwarded to my .mac, and all
outgoing emails are sent as "(e-mail address removed)".
