Email stuck in outbox when sending via other programs..Word, etc.

I'm using Outlook 2003 and have Gmail set as my pop 3 server. I've always
been able to send emails from Word or Publisher through Outlook, without
actually having Outlook open at the time.

But I must have changed a setting because now the emails sit in the outbox
until I open up Outlook and manually hit the 'send' button. After that all is
well.

I used to do the same thing with Outlook Express and I didn't have to have
Outlook Express open in order to send emails through the program.

Please help. Thanks.

This is how Outlook has always worked. Outlook must be open in order to
send messages.

Do you have a Send/Receive interval defined?

How Outlook Express dehaves has nothing to do with how Outlook behaves.
OE's SMTP engine is part of Windows and is always "running" (not as a
process, necessarily, but in terms of availability).
