email won't send unless...

Hello! My emails (all of a sudden .. for REAL!) wo't send automatically.
They sit in my out box. When I close outlook, I get a message that there are
still messages waiting to be sent. Then, I have to go into tools and send
them. This is a NEW OCCURANCE.

I am running outlook 2000
windows xp
