emails with attachments remain in the outbox unable to tell if sen

Emails with attachments appear not to be sent and remain in the outbox - But
in fact recipients have received email with attachments. Because of the email
remaining in the outbox I have resent and often recipients get several
copies. Is there something wrong with my settings?
