The emails I receive from this site bring me to an empty page when I click on
the recevied link. I have to go in manually. And also, the list of discussion
groups in the drop down box above is overwhelming in as much as it is not in
any sorted order.

First, this time I caught myself clicking the wrong link. Secondly I have an
RSS for a Woodshop site in Outlook. Can't I just put the reader there?

RSS is not the same. Newsgroups use NNTP protocol. Outlook doesn't have NNTP
capability.

Don't use the web interface. Use a newsreader.
