embedded projects dont update-HELP!

Ok, I have a project (MS Project 2003 prof) where I have embedded multiple projects to create a master program file. For some reason, when ever i open the master the only thing that is displayed is the grey summary bars, however I have some customized bar styles that should appear, if I click on the project and expand/refresh it, then it pulls in the correct bar styles. I've tried to save it when the embedded project is expanded, but if I close the file and reopen it, all grey summary bars again. AHHHHHH! Also my top tool bar, under the edit tab, the "link" option is greyed out. I'd like these to display the correct summary bar, whenever the file is updated, and the Master file is viewed automatically.
Any ideas here??
I'm stumped and so are several other project users around here.
